[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text animation_delay=”0″]The first Perkins 4236 engine was produced in 1964. More than 70,000 were made the first three years, with production growing to over 60,000 a year, in the UK alone, between 1969 and 1984. Β The engine was both innovative (usingΒ direct injection) and reliable, becoming a worldwide sales success over several decades. The engine, rated at 80 hp at 2800 rpm, powered tractors and other agricultural and industrial machines. PERQUINS 4.236 VERSIONS

The name 4.236, was formed from the number of cylinders (4), followed by the total displacement of the engine in cubic inches (236). There were turbo versions of the 4.236 available for all applications, except Marine. Later derivatives – the 4.248, 4.224, 4.212 and 4.204 – were designed with different capacities to suit particular customer needs.

The 4.236 tractor engines showed real innovation. They were capable of being used with a balancer, which smoothed out vibrations in the machine they were powering. There were also offered two versions of the engine block, which was a bold step forward, increasing the adaptability and applicability for our customers.

With the 4.236, Perkins research engineers introduced direct injection technology to their engines for the first time. The 4.236 followed the 6.354 in introducing direct injection into the Perkins range on both on/off highway engines, being the first 4-cylinder direct injection engine offered for on-highway use. The first direct injection engine offered by Perkins was the 4.270D introduced in 1957 but was limited to off-highway use.

With direct injection, fuel was injected directly into each cylinder through multi-hole injector assemblies. Indirect injection, on the other hand, saw fuel injected into a pre-chamber, rather than direct to the cylinder. This change brought better cold weather starting and greatly improved fuel economy, and has dominated diesel engine design ever since.

    THE PERKINS WAY

The 4.236 is one of the engines that has built the Perkins reputation all over the world. Over the next 30 years, the engine they originally produced was adapted and developed to meet the specific requirements of individual applications. They listened to the ideas of customers, clients and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) about the ways in which they wanted the engine to develop. New adaptations were incorporated into the original to maintain its position as a worldwide leader. That is the Perkins way.

In the late 1980s, the 4.236 was gradually superseded by the 1000 Series. Over the course of its lifetime the Pekins Peterborough site (in Cambridgeshire, England) alone made more than two million 4.236 family engines. And with millions of 4.236s and its derivatives still performing reliably for customers worldwide, it deserves its proud place in engine history.Β

That’s why we atΒ  PZ Europarts offer among our products, OEM parts for this outstanding diesel engine. If you still have one of these engines running on your machinery and you are looking for a specific part and you do not see it on our page, do not hesitate to contact us.

    • Stretch Bolts are used in aluminium Cylinder Heads and always need to be replaced after use.
    • The aluminium Cylinder Head will expand up to 4 times more than the older cast iron Cylinder Head. This is due to the high thermo conductive materials used within modern engines.
    • The Stretch Bolt is designed to work with the aluminium Cylinder Head unlike the older (re-usable) Bolts.
    • After use, Stretch Bolts are weakened and are not strong enough to be used again.
    • Please see the diagrams to identifying what happens when Stretch Bolts are re-used.

    • Ensure the Bolt holes in the Cylinder Block are clear of contamination.
    • Bolts are no longer torqued to a pre-set load, a standard torque wrench is only used during pre-loading.
    • Use a degree gauge while torqueing.
    • After this the Bolts are tightened via degrees of rotation and will not be affected by the friction during loading.

  • WHY DO HEAD GASKETS FAIL?

    WHY DO HEAD GASKETS FAIL?

    Head_Gasket_Failures_Sealing-v1
    Why Do Head Gasket Fail?

Why do the gaskets fail? Head gaskets are designed and manufactured to perform at 100% reliability. So why would they fail?

Here are a few reasons. Head gasket failures seem to be more prevalent after the first time the head has been removed. This is especially true since the introduction of substitute materials to replace asbestos. As a result, materials and assembly procedures have changed to assure optimal performance of head gaskets. Following is a list of possible causes for failures:

    WHY DO GASKETS FAIL?

    LINER STAND-OUT

Cylinder liner height above block must be to specification. Also, no more than 0.002 in. (0.05mm) variation between adjacent cylinders.

    IMPROPER PREPARATION

Clean, dry, oil free deck surface without adhesives is essential. It is a good idea to restore the threads and pre-lube capscrews before installing.

    IMPROPER ASSEMBLY

Locating head with aid of guide studs prevents damage to gasket while aligning bolt holes.

    TIGHTENING SEQUENCE

Some new procedures have been adopted. Refer to current component technical manual.

    HEAD CAPSCREW TORQUE

Four systems are in use for Waterloo block. Depends on bolt length and design. Refer to technical manual.

    OVERHEATING

    OVERSPEEDING

Increased cylinder pressure can cause gasket to fail due to overspeeding engine under load.

    OVERFUELING

Increased power increases cylinder pressure (BMEP) which can damage gasket.

    HEAD AND BLOCK FLATNESS

Check face for straightness both lengthwise and across the width.

    NEW CAPSCREWS

Use new head capscrews if existing ones are damaged or previously taken to yield.

    Mercedes Sprinter American History

IN 1995 Mercedes released the first-gen Sprinter van in Europe. The Sprinter was voted international van of the year and sold very well in the European market. Based on this success, Mercedes decided in 2001 to sell the Sprinter in the U.S. But, when the automaker tried to introduce its trucks into the US, it ran into a “chicken tax†problem.

    The chicken tax.

After World War II, both, the United States and European countries increased taxes on imports. It began with the export of cheap chickens to Europe by the United States. Firstly, European nations impose heavy taxes on imported chicken to protect their local farmers. In return, the United States also increased taxes on brandy, dextrin, potato starch, and light trucks. Since everything happened because of the chickens, it was called the chicken tax.

The tariffs on imported pickup trucks were 25% in the 90s. Consequently, this made it incredibly difficult for Mercedes to sell its Sprinter trucks at competitive prices.

Are Freightliner, Dodge and Mercedes Sprinter Vans the same?

The answer is yes. To avoid the tax, Mercedes started importing their Sprinter vans in pieces called CKD kits. Firstly, Mercedes would manufacture their trucks in Germany. After that, they would disassemble each van into a complete knockdown kit. And then, import each unit into the U.S. Once in the USA, the body is re-mated with the drivetrain before the vehicles are sent on for delivery. Certainly, this costs Mercedes money, but the cost is still less than the tax would set them back.

As a result, there are several different types of vans called “Sprinters†in the USA. Some have badges that say Dodge, some say Freightliner, and some say Mercedes, but they were all made in the same German factory.

1977 – Mercedes Benz launch the TN or T1 Van (Transporter Neu).

1995 – The first-generation Sprinter Van launches in Europe and wins “International Van of the Year.” These are the “T1N†Sprinters, which stands for Transporter 1 Neu (replacing a previous TN/T1).

2001 – The renewed T1N were the first Sprinters imported into the USA to be sold under the Freightliner brand. It’s worth noting that Freightliner is owned by Daimler Trucks North America, part of the global Mercedes empire.

2003 – Daimler (who own the Mercedes brand) merged with Chrysler (who own the Dodge brand). Now, the Sprinter was also available in the USA as a Dodge badged vehicle. It replaced the old Dodge Ram van.

2007 – The NCV3 Sprinter stands for “New Concept Van 3†was available in North America. Both, Dodge and Freightliner brands sold the new generation of Sprinter in the US.

2010 – This is the year that Mercedes “took back†the brand from Dodge. From 2010 onward, Sprinters were badged as Mercedes vehicles, although Freightliner still sold identical Sprinters under their brand too.

2014 – In 2014, Mercedes did a body refresh. Probably the most noticeable styling difference is that the area under the headlights changed from being metal to plastic, the same color as the bumper.
